History and Mission

More than a half century ago, the women of the Trenton Ladies Sick Benefit Society, a charitable and humanitarian organization, recognized the need in the community for a Home for elderly Jewish people who required medical, nursing and personal care in a secure environment. In 1939, they purchased and renovated a spacious home on Greenwood Avenue and named the facility the Home for the Aged Sons and Daughters of Israel.

In 1974 the organization was renamed Greenwood House, Home for the Jewish Aged and was relocated to its present location in Ewing Township. The goal was to provide skilled nursing care for 60 residents. As the community’s needs continued to grow, a new wing was added in 1980, expanding the Home’s capacity to 122 residents.

In 1992, a special care unit was added expanding the Home’s capacity to 132 residents. At the same time, the entire Home was refurbished.

In 2002, Greenwood House’s skilled nursing home was renamed to honor the Marcus family and is now called the Robert and Natalie Marcus Home for the Jewish Aged.

In 2003, Abrams Residence, a 20-bed assisted living community was added to serve elderly who are not ready for the services of a skilled nursing home but cannot live independently. This community consists of 16 one-bedroom and 2 two-bedroom apartments and offers a number of convenient services and amenities.

In 2006, we added 10 more beds to the Robert and Natalie Marcus Home for the Jewish Aged, along with five more apartments to The Abrams Residence.

As we continue to keep pace with the needs of our ever-aging community, we began offering homemaker services and hospice care to both our resident population and the community at large.
